Program Overview

Alberta Driver Education Courses – Recommended Training for New Drivers

Alberta Transportation strongly encourages all new drivers to enroll in a professional Driver Education and Training Course from a licensed Alberta driving school, approved under the Driver Training and Examination Regulation.

According to Alberta’s guidelines, Class 7 GDL drivers should complete 60 hours of adult-supervised, hands-on training before attempting the Class 5 GDL basic road test. If you’ve already practiced with a qualified, non-probationary adult driver, our Complete Driving Education Training—which includes 15 hours of classroom or online theory instruction plus 10 hours of behind-the-wheel lessons—is a great choice.

For beginners with no prior driving experience, we recommend our Comprehensive Driving Education Training, which includes 20 hours of in-car instruction and 15 hours of classroom or online knowledge-based learning. This all-in-one program is designed to build confidence, develop essential driving habits, and fully prepare students for the Alberta road test.

Behind-the-wheel lessons can be scheduled for up to 4 hours per day (with a break after 2 hours), though 2 hours per session is the ideal pace for most learners. Instructor travel time is never deducted from your lesson, and students can take a 10-minute break after each hour of driving.

You’ll receive expert training across a variety of driving conditions—including highway driving, Deerfoot Trail, heavy traffic, and all common parking scenarios.
